Rebuild Nevada, an education project of the Nevada Conservation League Education Fund believes that a sound, comprehensive energy and climate policy will and supports measures in Congress and at the state and local levels that will create, stimulate and support a clean energy economy:
- Generate green jobs in Nevada that cannot be exported.
- Diversify Nevada’s economy.
- Strengthen our nation’s security while creating energy independence for Nevada.
- Reduce harmful carbon pollution.
Nevada can be America’s hub of renewable energy: reducing our dependence on foreign oil, cutting greenhouse gas emissions and creating jobs at a time when Nevadans are enduring a record-high 13 percent unemployment rate. Further, diversifying our economy will also protect Nevada from future economic upheavals. The Silver State alone has the potential to meet the nation’s energy needs through renewable energy, but our clean energy sources – solar, wind and geothermal – are a mostly untapped frontier. To reach Nevada’s full energy potential for our own consumption as well as for export to neighboring states, efforts need to continue building a smart grid connecting Nevada’s remote regions to the transmission system.
Our bipartisan coalition works to educate Nevadans about the Renewable energy opportunities in Nevada:
- Creating a “smart grid” to better transport renewable energy to cities around Nevada.
- Weatherizing thousands of homes and businesses to be more energy efficient, save money and be more comfortable with programs such as HomeFree Nevada and others.
- Designing existing and future neighborhoods to be more connected with smaller footprints with access to daily services and a variety of transportation options.
- Retooling our cars and trucks and expanding mass transit.
Three Guiding Principles that the Rebuild Nevada Coalition abides by:
- We will work to create jobs in Nevada that can’t be exported overseas. The Rebuild Nevada coalition will support federal and local measures to train Nevadans on the research, engineering, maintenance, construction and other jobs related to creating and transporting renewable energy, and making our buildings and cars more energy efficient. We recognize that green jobs are also generated by making buildings more energy efficient and transmitting renewable energy through the state.
- We will support new, responsible renewable energy power plants throughout Nevada, including solar, wind and geothermal plants, to stabilize energy costs. Only four percent of Nevada’s power now comes from renewable energy. We will work with elected officials, utilities and local communities educate Nevadans about renewable energy production opportunities.,. We also will promote transmission lines and a smart grid to efficiently carry this renewable energy.
- Establishing a firm national limit on carbon emissions with an accompanying market that rewards smart companies for real reductions; generating trillions of dollars for profitable investment in clean energy technology and efficiency, clean and efficient vehicles and transportation, cleaner burning fuels, and create jobs; while strengthening our national security, reducing our dependence on oil and curbing the impacts of climate change.
